Our VW Campervan Conversion Process

From VW Transporter Panel Van to CamperKing conversion

1. Choosing and checking your vehicle

Stage One

One of the key aspects to building a good campervan is right at the very beginning – selection of the right van for you is crucial in order for you to end up with the right camper.

Key points for vehicle selection

  • Full health and background check
  • Good mechanical condition
  • The correct choice of wheelbase to suit your needs
  • The correct engine choice for your needs
  • Undertake a data check and ensure that all documentation is in order

2. Top and side preparation

Stage Two

The first area of conversion is to prepare the vehicle shell. We strip out the existing interior, fit our templates and remove the panels that we are going to replace.

Once cut out, all areas are smoothed to a softer finish, then the windows and support structures for the roof are installed. Once everything has been set and bonded, we finish the roof structure and fit our pop-top roof.

Upon completion, everything is adjusted and then water tested to ensure it functions correctly. All that remains is a full carpet installation and floor fitment ready for the second stage.

3. Interior Fittings

Stage Three

With your interior specification chosen already and your furniture pre-prepared, the completed shell arrives with the fitting team. The role of the fitting team is to install the cupboard furniture, and the gas, and electrical components. This is the most intricate part of the build process, so plenty of testing is involved.

It’s now time to fit the M1 tested bed, this also involves fitting a chassis spreader bar. This is heavy work and keeps the team in good shape!

Once complete, your van now looks more like a fitted out camper and it moves on to the next stage…

4. Accessories: Creating your Camper

Stage Four

So you now you have something that looks just like a campervan…so what’s missing? Finishing touches! Many of the campers have additional specification and items fitted to them. This is where they are added and really set your camper apart from others.

Lots of upgrades and accessories are available from solar panels and side bars to suspension kits and wheel upgrades. Our vans are built to enable these options to be retrospectively fitted at a later date, so you can treat yourself and your van to an upgrade later on. That’s birthdays and Christmas sorted!

5. Finalising the dream

Stage Five

The final and most important stage of the process. QUALITY CONTROL AND TESTING!

Having built the van, we go back to the beginning and cross reference all of the build instructions with a fine tooth comb to ensure we have everything correctly selected. We test all of the systems from gas and electricity, to stereos and so on. We pop tops, pull out beds, test drawers and cupboards and when everything is signed off, the campervan is finally ready to receive our warranty and is made available for its final valet and customer collection.

We issue habitation certificates for all of the campervans we build. The habitation check includes gas testing, electrical performance tests and water system checks. The habitation checks should be redone every year to ensure the safety and performance of your camper and to renew your rolling lifetime conversion warranty.
