The newest VW Transporter van at a glance.

The new VW T7 marks a bold evolution in VW’s iconic van line. For the first time, the VW Transporter T7 is built on the Ford Transit Custom platform. This shift brings tangible benefits in ride comfort, cargo capacity, and on-road refinement.

But what’s under the bonnet? Drivers will be able to choose from diesel, plug-in hybrid (PHEV), or fully electric powertrains, which is a first for this model.

Standard models include SWB and LWB versions, with increased load volume (up to 9 m³ on high-roof LWB models) and impressive payload capacity (~1,330 kg), plus a 2.8-tonne towing rating.

Standout features of the new VW T7:
  • Built on Ford Transit Custom platform for smoother handling
  • Available as diesel, plug-in hybrid, or fully electric
  • Upgraded interior with 13″ touchscreen, digital cockpit, and driver assists
  • SWB and LWB versions with up to 9m³ load volume
  • Trims include Startline, Trendline, Highline, and off-road-ready PanAmericana
  • Safety features: Adaptive Cruise, Lane Assist, blind-spot warning
  • Ideal for campervan conversion with modular layout and tech-rich base
What’s different about the VW T7?

Thanks to its Ford underpinnings, the VW T7 transporter delivers smoother handling and modern chassis dynamics. Its build includes a more rounded nose and sleek windshield, which also gives it a fresh, Buzz-inspired look.

In terms of interiors and tech, step inside and you’ll find a 13-inch touchscreen infotainment system together with a 12-inch digital driver display. Additional features across trim levels include keyless start, adaptive cruise, lane-keep assist, and physical shortcut buttons. It’s comfort and safety combined.

VW T7 dimensions, interior & technology.

The VW Transporter T7 is larger and more versatile than the T6.1, with lengths from 5,050 mm to 5,450 mm and up to 9.0 m³ of load space. Payloads reach 1.3 tonnes, and roof load capacity is 170 kg.

Inside, tech upgrades include a 13-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, a digital cockpit, and driver aids like Cruise Control, Lane Assist, and Park Assist. Comfort is improved with soft-touch materials, larger mirrors, smart storage, and smoother handling. The load area is flat, wide, and designed for conversion practicality.

VW T7 trim levels, comfort, and driving experience.

Available in Startline, Trendline, Highline, and PanAmericana, the T7 trims add options from rugged AWD styling to premium finishes.

Features include ambient lighting, a 13-inch screen, digital display, and improved cabin materials. Higher trims offer heated leather seats, climate control, and power mirrors. On the road, the T7 is smooth and responsive, making it ideal for both daily use and long-distance touring

VW T7 safety, driver assistance, and off-road ability.

Advanced driver aids come standard or optional: Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Assist, Park Assist, and blind-spot alerts reduce fatigue.

While Euro NCAP has yet to test it, the T7 is expected to perform well. PanAmericana models and 4Motion AWD add off-road confidence, with raised suspension and all-terrain tyres. So, it’s perfect for remote travel and campervan adventures.

VW T6 vs T7 at a glance.

Overall, the VW T7 brings significant improvements over the T6/T6.1 in design, tech, payload, and value, while maintaining the rugged practicality and campervan utility VW owners love. The continued sale of the T6.1 panel van provides flexible options for campervan conversions, but the T7 clearly represents the future of VW transporters and campervan travel.

Platform & design

T6/T6.1 were built on VW’s own platform. The new VW T7 swaps to the Ford Transit Custom underpinnings, giving it a more aerodynamic look and a refreshed interior. There’s a new front-end styling, sleeker headlights, and a modernised cabin feel.

The body is marginally updated: the T7 is slightly narrower at 2.27m vs T6’s 2.29, but otherwise dimensions remain close.

Powertrains & transmission

T6/T6.1 offered a wide range: diesel engines from 90hp to 204hp, available in 5- or 6-speed manuals and 7-speed DSG automatic.

The T7 VW Transporter streamlines options: diesel in 110hp, 150hp, 170hp; 6-speed manual or 8-speed DSG; it also introduces petrol PHEV and all-electric variants.

Tech & infotainment

T6.1 included mid-decade updates like Virtual Cockpit and driver assistance but still relied on older touchscreens.

In contrast, the T7 raises the bar with a 13″ central screen, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, DAB+, lane assist, front assist, traffic sign recognition, electric folding mirrors, and stop/start button as standard.

Payload & practicality

T6 models carried payloads up to approximately 1280 kg.

The T7 diesel offers payloads from 851kg to 1,242 kg; electric variants range 767kg–1,088kg; trailer braked weight is up to 2,800 kg.

Interior load space grows, too, with cargo length increases by 6cm and width between wheel arches by 15cm, boosting load volume around 5%.
