Wub Dubs

9th January 2012

Looking for a Vw camper gift or accessory item, this site is great and the people behind it are even better,

visit : www.wubsdubs.co.uk

A little extract from their site below by Ian the founder of wubs dubs,

Having visited Cornwall as a kid & having been a keen surfer in my time I’ve always loved the beach lifestyle & all associated with it including all things DUB!

I’ve owned various VW’s over the years but always yearned for that infamous Camper. 3 years ago I was lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time & made the dream of owning a splity into a reality! 1964 Split Screen Devon Camper & love it!

As all of you out there know, not only does it take time but also a lot of money to get your Dub looking just right but I have to say it’s been a real pleasure & haven’t looked back. In January 2009 I was diagnosed with an incurable Cancer that turned both my then Fiancé life & mine upside down. After taking stock I wanted to do something to do with my passion for VW’s so after many months of hard work & organising by my now wife, Ange for whom I am forever indebted & Hayley & Pete of Clare Web Designs, Wubs Dubs was born!

Please feel free to browse around the site though if you cant find what you are looking for then please give us a call & we will do our up most to find it for you. Maybe you would like something for a friend, colleague or even a loved one, don’t forget we’re here to help. Wubs Dubs will be adding new & exciting ranges of all things Dubs going forward so don’t forget to sign up to our News Letter & we’lll keep you posted. It would be great to also receive your comments & feedback. We will be attending some of the shows up ‘n’ down the country when ever possible so why not make yourself known & come ‘n’ have a chat

Cheers Wub

The Best Beach weekend break in the UK

11th July 2011

We asked our customers recently and got alot of feed back, one or two even changed plans and headed off to destinations that had been suggested in order to see for themselves, well a popular choice and indeed one of ours aswell is up on the Norfolk coast.

The village is called Wells next the Sea  and is a small fishing village turned tourist destination and boasts one of the biggest and quietest open sandy beaches we have come across. Doggy friendly and with lots of campsite options, logistics are easy. local food, pubs and restaurants are also good, so if its a stroll down the beach away from all the stress you want then we would recommend this spot if you want to try somewhere new

General camper information site

7th July 2011

We have been impressed with the following website for general information for either buying, renovating or selling all types of Vw campers, have a look at http://www.vwcamperguide.com/

they say the following……………………

If you are thinking about buying a Volkswagen Camper then you have come to the right place.

This site aims to provide useful buyers guides for all the different types of Volkswagen Bus available starting with Type 2 Bay Window and Wedge Shape T25 / T3 Conversions (known as the Vanagon in USA).

In the future I hope to add buying guides for Split Screen and T4 campers as well.

The VW camper buyer guides contain information on checks to make when considering buying a camper with relation to bodywork, mechanics, electrics, interiors, and roofs.

So we think its another good source of advice when you need further guidance … check them out

A history lesson in names

30th June 2011

Names and nicknames

Like the Beetle, from the beginning, the Type 2 earned many nicknames from its fans. Among the most popular,[citation needed] at least in Germany, are VW-Bus and Bulli (or Bully) or Hippie-van or the bus. The Type 2 was meant to be officially named the Bully, but Heinrich Lanz, producer of the Lanz Bulldog farm tractor, intervened.[citation needed] The model was then presented as the Volkswagen Transporter and Volkswagen Kleinbus, but the Bully nickname still caught on.

The official German-language model names Transporter and Kombi (Kombinationskraftwagen, combined-use vehicle) have also caught on as nicknames. Kombi is not only the name of the passenger variant, but is also the Australasian and Brazilian term for the whole Type 2 family; in much the same way that they are all called VW-Bus in Germany, even the pickup truck variations. In Mexico, the German Kombi was translated as Combi, and became a household word thanks to the vehicle’s popularity in Mexico City‘s public transportation system. In Peru, where the term Combi was similarly adopted, the term Combi Asesina (Murdering Combi) is often used for buses of similar size, due to the notorious recklessness and competition of bus drivers in Lima to get passengers. In Portugal it is known as Pão-de-Forma (Breadloaf) because its design resembles a bread baked in a mold. Similarly, in Denmark, the Type 2 is referred to as Rugbrød (Rye bread). Finns dubbed it Kleinbus (mini-bus), as many taxicab companies adopted it for group transportation; the name Kleinbus has become an appellative for all passenger vans. The vehicle is also known as Kleinbus in Chile.

In the US, however, it is a VW bus, a “vee-dub”, a minibus, a hippie-mobile, hippie bus, or hippie van, “combie”, Microbus or a Transporter to aficionados. The early versions produced before 1967 used a split front windshield (giving rise to the nickname “Splitty”), and their comparative rarity has led to their becoming sought after by collectors and enthusiasts. The next version, sold in the US market from 1968–1979, is characterised by a large, curved windshield and is commonly called a “bay-window”. It was replaced by the Vanagon, of which only the Westfalia camper version has a common nickname, “Westy”.

It was called Volksie Bus in South Africa, notable in a series of that country’s TV commercials. Kombi is also a generic nickname for vans and minibuses in South Africa and Swaziland, often used as a means of public transportation. In Nigeria it was called Danfo.

In the UK, it is known as a “Campervan”, “hippy van”, “vdub”, “love machine of delight”, “Shaggin-Wagen” and as the more tongue-in-cheek “mind expanding van”.

Happy Anniversary Volkswagen 60 years !!!

2nd June 2011

The Volkswagen camper van celebrates 60 years of production this year – and for its generations of fans, the love affair is far from over.

They lie on their backs in oil, get pulled from side to side by their brakes and greet steep hills with a nervous sigh but when you are truly in love nothing really matters.

The owners of vintage VW camper vans are a dedicated bunch, lavishing care, attention and money on their beloved wheels.

They are the first to admit their “Combis” stop badly, weigh a ton, are underpowered and prone to electrical failure – but despite the faults, they remain a magnetic pull.

Campers have been the vehicle of choice for globe trotters, festival-goers, surfers and rock stars for six decades.

Love wagon: Romeo and Juliet in the Globe theatre’s touring production

So what is the appeal, and why, like the Routemaster bus or Mini, is the humble van so revered?

Long-term owner Adrian Ward, 45, has more than 25 years experience restoring them and runs a dedicated Camper van garage in Bournemouth.

“They force you to take it easy, force you to slow down, if you’re in a hurry then forget it,” he explains.

“There’s a driving position you develop – this slouch with your elbows resting on the wheel and you leant over it. All of a sudden you can take it easy and watch everyone fly past you.

“There’s a well known phrase, ‘it’s not about the destination, it’s about the journey’ – that’s very apt when you’re in a camper.”

New VW TV advert coming soon

20th May 2011

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is launching its first TV ad campaign in five years to coincide with the climax of the football season

The 60-second spot, created by Iris, will launch during Sunday’s Sky Sport’s coverage of the final matches of the Premier League season.

Running across TV and radio, the activity has been planned and bought by MediaCom and runs for six weeks.

Set against the Beach Boys’ ‘God Only Knows’ track, the ad moves away from promoting a specific model and instead focuses on the brand’s heritage, emphasising the relationship between owners, drivers and their vans.

It features a man polishing his VW campervan, a RAC breakdown vehicle and a pick up van.

Shaun McIlrath, Iris’s executive creative director, worked on the ad alongside deputy creative directors Phil Kitching and Lou Bogue. Judy Ross produced the ad, which was directed by Tony Barry. Academy was the production company behind the ad.

McIlrath said: “VW commercial vehicles hold a unique place in the affections of their owners. In research we were amazed by how many people consistently used the word “love” when describing VW vans.

“There’s 60 years of heritage, reliability and iconic design, but what came across most was a real sense of the bond between the owner and the vehicle they rely on – whether that’s an original Transporter from the 1950′s or the latest Sportline model. It’s a partnership and we wanted to bring that relationship to life.”

Adrian Brook, media manager of Mediacom, said: “Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has had a very close emotional connection with their drivers for over 60 years and this campaign aims to celebrate this relationship.”

New Camper style tents

18th May 2011

If you love music, mud and Mother Nature you’re probably heading to a camp site at some point this summer. But why take shelter in some dull, conventional tent when you can recreate the Summer of Love in the hippie-tastic VW Camper Van Tent.

Officially licensed, this stunning four-man (or lady, natch) tent is a luxe, full-size replica of the iconic 1965 VW Camper Van synonymous with 60s counterculture. It’s so evocative you can almost hear the Mamas and the Papas singing California Dreamin’ every time you feast your eyes on its beautifully breadloaf-ish form. Indeed we half expected Mama Cass to tumble out when we first saw this groovy Vee-Dub. You’ll be the envy of the campsite!

Follow this link to view details, we love it http://www.firebox.com/product/3644/VW-Camper-Van-Tent

Hawkstone Park

Hawkstone Park Motorcross event

6th May 2010

We have had a great weekend with over Six thousand visitors at the event, Lots of great feedback and a huge demand to rent the campers for events coming up this year, it was our first Motorcross event and if you haven’t been and want and interesting and entertaining day out then it does not disappoint.

Hawkstone Park remains one of the most famous moto-x circuits in the World, and certainly the most well known in the UK.

The steep Hawkstone hill with its exposed rock face near the summit, which rises from the lower section of the track as the riders cross the line each lap, has been the backdrop to many classic moto-x images and is instantly recognised the World over.

The deep sand that is present throughout the circuit becomes rougher as the meeting progresses, creating a new test for rider and machine as they take to the start gate for each and every moto. The more tired the riders become the greater the challenge becomes.

The whoop section out in woods is still a favourite amongst spectators, with only the brave daring to tackle this technical part of the lap on full throttle. The consequences of mistiming such an attack normally results in a spectacular crash, which leaves a lasting memory both with the rider and the assembled audience.

The flowing and undulating circuit has many good vantage points for the public, but in terms of crowd there is never any deeper gathering than at the great sand pit section just before the bridge that separates the riders from the welcome sight of the finish line, bar a few new corners.

Since Jobe lept above Malherbe in the 1984 – 500 GP, captured in the most iconic moto-x image of all time taken by Nick Haskell, people have flocked to this point to witness similar feats of bravery.

Over the twenty or so years since, judging by the returning crowds, they have never been disappointed by the action that this truly great circuit continues to serve them.
